Assertiveness training is a form of CBT that is designed to help you to learn how to stand up for your rights and get what you want. This can include expressing your feelings effectively, making known what you want, making requests, saying “no,” and standing up for yourself.
Difficulties with assertiveness are often due to being overly passive, and never getting what one wants, or being overly aggressive and getting what one wants, but doing so at the expense of relationships with others.
Individual assertiveness training assesses the difficulties you experience in relationships and helps you identify skills that you need to develop.Identifying thoughts and attitudes that are self-defeating, and learning to adopt more helpful ways of thinking about things, can help to reduce anxiety and increase confidence.
Intense emotions that inhibit assertiveness can be effectively treated with emotion regulation strategies such as relaxation training and distress tolerance. You will learn simple tools to use across all challenging situations.
