Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is caused by a functional disorder of the gut even though the structure may appear normal. The pain and discomfort can damage your quality of life. IBS may cause constipation, diarrhoea, or both. Pain may be mild to severe and may occur at a particular time of the day.
Symptoms include pain and discomfort in the abdomen, bloated abdomen; gas; indigestion; feeling full; nausea; diarrhea; constipation; heartburn. Research is unable to identify the exact cause of IBS. Symptoms may worsen with stress and specific foods may trigger symptoms.
As IBS is regarded as a medical condition, it’s important to consult your doctor first for information, advice and a diagnosis. There is no cure for IBS, however CBT can help you to cope with the anxiety associated with IBS, teach relaxation techniques and develop coping strategies.
